Where: Links go to YouTube.
Why: This is an depth analysis to support the argument that The Force Awakens is less formulaic than the Prequels. Not only did this make me reexamine my less than favorable opinion of TFA but also my long standing belief that Abrams is destroying everything I’ve held sacred since childhood. It also changed how I look at and appreciate The Last Jedi.
Recc’d for Star Wars fans, writers, reviewers, and film makers.

What: Science fantasy short story.
Who: George R.R. Martin, known for Game of Thrones.
When: Humanity’s future.
Why: Excellent story with a heavier influence on philosophy and the meaning of religion, life, death, and existence, than on future tech or super powers. Winner of the 1975 Hugo Award for Best Novella.

Song of Lya on Amazon Kindle

Recc’d for:
Fans of Martin, interested in his early work.
Writing students interesting in seeing the evolution of a writer and their work.
People who have ever wondered what a Star Trek: The Next Generation episode written by Martin would look like. Answer - canon complicit (without even trying) and enjoyable! I would watch a Star Trek series headed by Martin in a heartbeat.

Plot: A telepath and an empath go down to an alien world to investigate why some of their fellow humans are converting to the local, and highly questionable, religion.

Why I liked it: I’m a sucker for sci-fi tales that mix religion in. It’s well written and described - cause Martin.

What could have been done better:
The climax was obvious way in advance.
Martin didn’t turn this into a series.
He used the same names of the leads for characters in Song of Ice and Fire, which is a bit distracting given the prominence and very different relationships of the namesakes between the two stories.

Audio Drama: Torchwood 1.4 One Rule

What: One hour audio drama, ‘monster of the week’ episode.
Who: Stars Yvonne Hartman from Doctor Who ‘Army of Ghosts’.
When: Set during the missing year of Nine and Rose’s traveling, soon after the Nestene Consciousness attack.
Where: London and Cardiff.
Why: It’s brilliant! And a teensy bit homoerotic :-)
Recc’d for: Other Yvonne Hartman fans and hard core Torchwood fans.

Why I liked it: It’s narrated by the actress who played Yvonne (sigh) on Doctor Who. We get lots of references to the Torchwood team pre-show, providing a cool link between the worlds of Who and TW.  It’s a well written episode with interesting side characters, some moments of genuine horror as well as humor, and even some thoughtfulness from an unexpected source.

But mostly, I enjoyed it because we get inside Yvonne’s head, see her in action, and learn about her as a person. In other words - great fan fic inspiration!

What could have been done better: There’s not enough episodes in this audio drama series starring Yvonne :-/

For this outstanding post, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] sabotabby, our resident expert on the western genre.

Television:
Deadwood: This is one of my top three shows of all time, along with Breaking Bad and Doctor Who. Based on historical events and figures, but what it does with them is just unexpected and beautiful. It also has one of the best narrative shifts where they realize that the hero is boring and the villain is awesome, so let's just make the villain the hero in season 2. The best thing about it is that it has more swearing than any show that is not called The Thick Of It, mostly cocksucker (there is one character who only knows three words in English and one of them is cocksucker), but all of the dialogue is in iambic pentameter. It's utter genius.

More great SFF shows on Netflix:
Dramaworld - a young American woman gets pulled into her favorite K Drama show and discovers the real world behind the television. Fantasy mystery, comedy, satire. Each episode is short like a web-series, but there’s so much going on, that it seems full length. I’m saving the last couple of episodes (because I’m like that) but the show completely sucked me in.

My favorite part is that it stars Liv Hewson, one of my many favorite parts from The Santa Clarita Diet (she plays Drew Barrymore’s daughter). I now love Liv anymore because according to her Wiki page, her “written work includes "lots of re-imaginings of fairytales and mythology with a queer and dark slant."” Yeah, and where can I find that?

Mystery Science Theater 3000 The Return - OMG!!!!! I literally just found out about this, and I’m just gonna assume it’s the best thing on the interwebs because it stars (OMG) Felicia Day and Patton Oswalt (OMFG). If anyone needs me, you know where I’ll be...
