What: Puzzle for October 2017.

Why: For striving, accomplishment, glory, and banners!

When: To enter the contest proper and receive a banner, post fics to puzzleprompts by 11pm EST, Saturday, November 4th. Give or take 12 hours for emergencies.

Otherwise, puzzles may be posted wherever and whenever you want, including to our AO3 archive. But please, wherever you post, include a link to puzzleprompts, thanks!

Reminder: Entries may also be answers to other comms' prompts. But they must be newly completed!
If these prompts help you finish a stalled fic, that’s what we’re here for. But please, don’t submit fics completed months ago that happen to fit this month’s puzzle.

Note: I’m extending the due date to being late on posting.
Also, this will be the last new puzzle of the year. November, December, and January will be amnesty months.

Author Notes: Please use notes to clarify how you are using the pieces. Especially for long fics, metaphorical uses, and fics from original or small fandoms.

Rules and Guidelines

October Puzzle

*All powers and attempts at magic/sci-tech, etc. can go horribly wrong, or simply not succeed, and still count.

*Possible interpretations are not limited to the below. These are just examples to intrigue your muses.

Creature Feature - Bears and Sloths

Can be alien, robotic, shape-shifters, mythological creature, etc.

Can be mundane earth bear or sloth.

Absolutely Zootopia counts!

Power Hour - Arboreal/Tree Climbing/Navigating

Power does not have to be shown, but ability must be mentioned or climbing gear shown.

Can be a natural ability, learned skill, sci-tech, magic, etc.

Rock climbing and wall scaling count.
Examples: cats, bears, squirrels, etc.

Wookies and Ewoks count.

Zeb from SW: Rebels counts.

Wildlings scaling The Wall count.

Huns scaling the Great Wall count.

Spock and Vulcan's count, as they are evolved felines and still climb trees.

If using a bear or sloth for both prompts, then that bear/sloth needs to climb, or be up in, a tree during the fic.

Classifieds - Lumber jack, Fruit picker, Forest/Jungle Guide

What do these all have in common? Their work depends on trees. So, if anyone has a character with another forest/tree related job, please ask first, but I’ll probably okay its use.

Sports and Recc - Fishing

Can be people or animals fishing for food, relaxation, or competition.

If it’s a bear, fishing must be shown.

Characters can be getting ready or coming home from fishing.

Brokeback Mountain counts!

Geology Rocks - Waning Moon

New moon and lunar eclipses count.

Night somewhere that has no moon and so no natural nocturnal light source.

Mother Nature - Autumn/Fall

Random Object - saw/axe/hatchet/tomahawk/machete

One of these must be present in the fic. Doesn’t have to be in use.

Random Descriptor - Mossy

Something must be described as being mossy or covered in moss, etc.
